fifteen & eleven

This is the secret I’ve come to appreciate of fifteen and eleven – for all the fiery independence of their age, both children still clamor for borrowed time.
Some days I forget how little effort that takes.
This morning I leashed our dog and invited myself along for the short walk to their bus stop. Not because either child needed me, but because I could. There was no obligation to intervene in their time together and no vote to challenge my whim. There was also no resistance to my company.
The lawn crackled its protest against our footprints as we cut a path around the ice that mocked our cautiousness. Together we marveled at the pattern of stars scattered across the sidewalk as the moon lit the snow and ice with magic. Little clouds of happy exclamations against the crisp winter air.
I had forgotten how much there is to see and hear in the fleeting moments before dawn. So often I watch both children lingering distractedly over invisible interests, wondering at their amusement, but today I let myself entertain their discoveries.
Minutes stretched in frivolous excess, turning nothing much into something extraordinary for the effort.
As both children boarded their bus I turned my footsteps to walk my afternoon path in reverse; waving one last goodbye as the bus circled the neighborhood en route to school.
Stealing a moment for myself.

I woke up yesterday unassisted by the persistent, mechanical nudge of my faithful alarm clock. I had tumbled to bed the evening before, only half conscious having fallen asleep nestled on our couch, the blanket my mother made me keeping out the chill of the air conditioner. I missed a step and my alarm slept unset. It was a rare sleep from which I woke uncertain of the day and obligations. In fact it took me a moment to register I was late. I don’t like the chaotic panic of multitasking morning routines in fast forward so I consciously let go of normal and shifted my focus. This is why I am sharing an otherwise uneventful moment: one small change and my morning unfolded with promise. In slowing down, even with less time for simple routines, I was tuned in to what I was doing rather than going through the motions of the morning. My expectations changed and I was happily surprised. Everything did get done. Everyone was prepared for the day. My morning was alarmingly, pleasantly calm.

One word, stretched out in whiney tones, marking a space of resistance even as I begrudgingly follow the predetermined path of my day. Summer school and swim lessons tugging me forcefully from beneath the weight of evening dreams and into morning routines. I want to pout, plug my ears and hum to drown out the sound of the alarm clock nagging me out of bed. Instead, I curl up with a cup of coffee and let the sunshine fade my frustrations. Saturday I will sleep in.
