better

In my last post I spoke from a place of pain.  Mindful of a difficult moment in my child’s day I absorbed his distress, weaving it into my frustration with another child’s behavior.  Mentally stomping my feet, I willed others to speak and act from a place of patience, kindness, and tolerance.  A soap box is a lonely companion, so I placed myself in the company of those towards whom I felt angry and looked inward to see where I could do better.

The question I am asking myself today is:  Am I living in a place of patience, kindness, and tolerance?  My answer came quickly and with a force resonating with the burden of truth.  So, with a deep breath, I am looking forward with the expectation that I too can do better.

truths

I woke up today very conscious of two simple truths.  First, other people’s opinions should not be the standard by which I judge my own accomplishments.  More importantly, my children are not my accomplishments.  There are a multitude of other truths, but these two were palpable in the early morning hours and I needed to create a space in which to better see them.

Even in adulthood I often pause and look to someone I trust to critique what I know.  When their opinion validates my own, I feel a sense of accomplishment.  On the occasion I find myself caught in disagreement, insecurity casts doubt.  Right or wrong, so much of my own peace and joy rest outside my mind and heart.

My children bless me with countless moments of joy, intermittent with doubt.  Am I doing my best?  Could I have done something else, made a different decision?  Are my children handicapped for my hindsight?  I am learning that so many of their strengths and challenges are their own and my role as their mother is not to fix their world.  Each accomplishment is their own, just as each challenge must be met with their determination not the momentum of my ability.  I am trying to celebrate their stumbles as lessons and their success as part of their greater story.  I am learning complexity offers a richness that builds confidence as much as character.

These words are my release; an effort to lay my early morning thoughts in an open space.  Motherhood and friendship have given me a unique love that nurtures these moments of reflection.  I am trying to own my challenges, find balance, and embrace joy.

uninvited

Today’s challenge: stillness.  There are moments when I can feel unhappiness pulling at my subconscious, taunting me with self-doubt or negativity.  In response I tend to smile brighter, chase after projects more enthusiastically, increase the speed and momentum of my day in an effort to out race thoughts or feelings I am unsure of.

This morning, with moments of kindness and love gracing my daily routine, I rejected disharmony as an impostor.  Still, it followed me as I walked my children to school and settled over me like the snow quietly sleeping on the ground.  Irritated by the burden of my companion’s weight I grew angry and challenged this uninvited guest to say their piece.  Silence.

So, today I am going to be still.  I will take my spirit’s light and shine it into the dark corners of my mind and see if there is indeed a truth I have overlooked.  Kindness and Patience will be my friends in stillness.
