knock on wood

August 15, 2012 § 2 Comments

I like to think I am above superstitious beliefs, I am not. Difficult days have dissipated and I am cautiously releasing the breath I have been holding while we struggled to find peace with our son’s challenging behaviors this summer. A string of good days and I am brimming with hope. Knock on wood.

My optimism is being held in check by a tiny superstitious fear that I will jinx the good, inviting the bad. Misfortune seeking a place amidst our contentment. In an unending game of musical chairs we shuffle along hoping to rest in good fortune, dodging poor luck.

I am hesitant to divulge the details, good or bad, least I tempt fate to mock my celebration with a lesson in humility. Instead, I am giving thanks for calmer days and knocking on wood.

Crossing fingers. Thanks for sharing. My own son has difficulties and is currently on an upswing. It’s hard not to feel anxious. Thanks for the reminder to appreciate what I have, not what might happen.
