a picture’s worth

April 18, 2015 § 5 Comments

It seems impossible that on the most unexceptional day, in the middle of nothing extraordinary, an assumed piece of our day can be lost in plain sight.

Today, in a technical conundrum outside my expertise, I lost months of writing and years of family photos. It was an error of ignorance and arrogance; I had never paused to consider what I might lose or the recklessness of my conceit.

It is a mysterious grief, this loss I cannot measure. Even now it seems I should wake tomorrow in time to prevent what I cannot escape.

Pictures lost to memories and words whispered against the wind. I would trade the most extravagant of my possessions for a handful of what I cannot spare.

I have many family photographs-old family photographs (you know what I’m like with those!) that I have on my PC, that I fear losing. Great-grandparents, back to 1880’s. I really should back them up.

Oh, Andy. Back up now and then again. I am so heartsick over a handful of paper memories.

I can imagine how sick you feel. When I was a teenager I lost a great photograph of my Gt Grandfather at the front in the First World War. He and some friends were sat on top of, and in front of, one of the first prototype tanks. It was a brilliant photograph, and I didn’t truly appreciate the extent of the loss until I was older. Every now and again, particularly around Remembrance Sunday, I share the only other photo of him that I have in his uniform. Trying to make amends, I suppose.

  • That is awful and yes, the only word that can be used is grief. That said, are you sure it’s irrecoverable? There may be options such as this: http://www.easeus.com/data-recovery-software/

The initial evidence was discouraging. I do have the option of investing in a more costly and uncertain retrieval, but I’m struggling to validate the financial burden of said effort without an easy guarantee.
