There is no paper trail to validate this claim, no certification of care or qualification to our companion’s title. Instead there is only the quality of our days; the gentle, steadfast way she loves us. We are better people in her care.

Her affection is patient and kind, she nestles loyally into the perimeter of our attention when obligations distract us from play. There is no record of our errors, no anger in her posture; there is only the most innocent attentiveness to our emotions. She sits beside us in comfort and encouragement, a silent keeper of our worries and enthusiastic champion of good cheer.

She is the first face we see at the dawn of each day, a companionable shadow. The one who welcomes us home, with an unguarded pleasure. She moves cautiously between us and strangers with a purposeful sense of protection and, alternately, behind us with uncertainty.

Our children lean into her care, eager to tend to her happiness, but our service is deceptively unbalanced to her own. She draws us outside our rhythms of self into a sense of selflessness, from indoors to outdoors and from procrastination to play.

The part of me that resisted the unpredictable inconveniences, the mayhem of messes and the burden of need has found a greater dependency on her joy, a calmness in the chaos and a purpose in her need. I worried our responsibilities would consume our restfulness and freedom without knowing that she would rejuvenate us collectively with a reckless joy that jostled the expected into a curious new knowing.

this & that

This month has been a study in contrasts; less of this and more of that.

Change and conflict were tempermental companions this past year as my husband and I navigated uncertainty with a forced conviction and false confidence. Work worries and family tensions frayed the tender strings of patience as we trudged through the unfamiliarity of old routines mourning the comforts of hope in the company of fear.

At the least convenient opportunity we leapt into a messy, full-hearted commitment to a sweet pup; abruptly interrupting our expectations with an assumption of change. It was a pinch on the arm, a foot thrust forcefully into a doorway; calling us to attention and creating space for light.

This year we have become still where we were once frantically busy with empty endeavors; attentive where we had become unconsciously paralyzed. Our routines had been reshaped by doubts and our hope informed by a stubborn complacency, hollow gestures of living shaded by misfortune.

None of this is to say happiness swings to the joy of a puppy’s love. It doesn’t.

At the core of discovery and recognition there was a discomfort that alerted our consciousness to greater contentment just askew of our perspective. In tending to another’s happiness we looked further outside our discontent.

Rather than tallying what we might lose we have been inventorying what we have; unsettled by comfort we have created sources of rejuvenation.   We are trying new things, planning for change and playing at forgotten interests. More of that which was ever-present and overlooked; less of what we do not need and cannot control.

dog days

The past two weeks have been a happy blur of holidays and home. Lingering Christmas decorations are as telling as the misplaced shoes drafted for mischief in moments of distraction.

There is a joyful chaos to the predictable disruption of order that can be measured in muddy puppy prints and unexpected puddles. Each mess is met with the comic frustration of uncoordinated damage control as we trip collectively over the rough edges of progress in a cautious choreography of care.

Simple expectations and firm boundaries have gifted us a new language as we struggle, clumsily, toward consistency. We’re teaching our pup about the space of our home, but we’re also learning a bit about ourselves and one another as we share inconvenient responsibilities and celebrate unexceptional success with notable enthusiasm.

We are laughing and sighing in unison, sharing sympathetic glances and uncovering new smiles. We’ve set aside of our worries and found extra excuses to play, spent less time planning for company and more time doing nothing, together.

This is the secret I’ve come to understand, the days are longer in puppy years for the time we cease to count while we tend to the little things that matter.

puppy love

It feels too recent that we tended to the emotions of an abrupt goodbye to our first family pet. Impossible that we could tread against the familiar  landscape of our memories and love someone new.

The logical pieces of my brain have calculated the unavoidable messiness of sacrificing order while creating a new normal. Sleepless nights and inconvenient messes, hallmarks of a puppy’s home.

Emotionally, I can already feel the weight of my companion’s shadow and the eagerness of her untempered affection. It is a new beginning in an old love story, all for the love of a puppy.

puppy love

Temporary insanity, our judgement clouded by sentiment, we adopted a puppy.  The homecoming was intended, but unscheduled. For years our son had begged for a canine companion.  My husband and I danced around the subject avoiding a commitment by pledging One Day.  Still, the calendar gave no indication that One Day was That Day.

In a moment of spontaneity I suggested to my husband we visit a local pet store with both children and attempt to identify, individually and collectively, our prerequisites for picking a puppy.  Breed, adult size, personality were concepts we had yet to discuss. Logic was soon overpowered by animal attraction.  One by one, we were each drawn to a crimson bundle with eager green eyes.  On clumsy puppy paws she tumbled onto our laps finding a home in our hearts.

We can mark the passage of time by our pup’s stages; stuffed animals, slippers, and socks have fallen victim to teething and teasing.  Errands and excursions are scheduled around our furry family member’s comfort.  Guests have weathered kisses and full-contact embraces with shock and grace.  Chaos is as common as cuddles and smiles as prevalent as apologies.  It is, after all, a dog’s life.
