Playing at uncertain beginnings.

I carry your memory like marbles against my tongue, a weight that pushes against my thoughts even as it holds my words in silence. Your name is soundless in my mouth, a single memory among decades of stolen minutes. On a cold night, in a month I cannot remember and a town I have long since abandoned, we gathered near to where we first met.

Stranded in a hopeless acceptance of unhappy desperation, I sit anxiously in fear of loosing something I do not want. I have gathered my spirit into tidy fictions of credibility; lines of manipulated truths that presume qualifications for tasks I am ill equipped to perform. Whatever delusions of grandeur I posses are daydreams borrowed from storylines of another’s telling.

telling stories

I’ve been looking for words, straining against doubt for the love of an impossible task. I promised myself, now that we are settled, I would reserve a space in my day, at this moment of my life, for the work of fulfilling a private goal with a longer writing exercise.

Arrogantly I assumed fortune would accommodate my intentions with remnants of my lost story, a thread that would unravel into completion. Instead the mechanics of creativity have been more painfully laborious.

It’s far simpler to capture words when they flow from fleeting inspiration.  A moment’s awakening materialized. It is much harder to push against the resistance of finding those hidden treasures in the dark of silence. Some days my muse is a stubborn companion.

The timing of my endeavor serendipitously coincided with a national writing program; one I have not enlisted for support. It was tempting to engage an existing community for direction, but, perhaps mistakenly, it feels as if the work of writing should begin from a more solitary pursuit.

Still, I admire those souls who gather in a public place of accountability for the completion of a personal goal. It is quite brave to wear your heart on your sleeve; to sound out your mistakes in a voice of determined vulnerability.

As November marks a time of mindful appreciation for the bounty of our good fortune, I am thankful for you, those generous companions in my clumsy meandering among imperfect musings. Thank you for this safe space of creativity and accountability.

writing out loud

Yesterday I stumbled upon a writer; someone I have read occasionally, but whom my husband follows more closely for her recipes. I’m not certain either of us could tell you her first name, but there was an immediate sense of familiarity. Her meals have enriched our dinner time with recipes that guided my husband through his earliest efforts at meal planning.

In the moment I first recognized this woman I debated any intrusion upon her day, resisting an acknowledgment beyond a polite hello. Shopping with her young son, I hesitated to interrupt her task over a past kindness.

Last April a close friend had requested this woman/writer/cook send my husband a celebratory note for his 40th birthday. She did. It was a happy surprise on a day of many thoughtful personal acknowledgments.

Yesterday it suddenly felt very human and impossibly necessary to say thank you, to offer a face for my gratitude. Except I didn’t know who to thank. I realized seconds before my inevitably clumsy interruption that I didn’t know where to begin in my misguided good intentions without a name.

I debated referencing her by site, but it felt impossible to identify this woman so singularly as she stood tethered to a far greater joy. Hand in hand with her child, I began instead with: Do you write?

My question was intended to help identify my familiarity that I might be permitted my small intrusion. Instead the question followed me home like a stray in want of attention.

Long after I had relayed my thanks for her personal note and expressed my appreciation for the recipes that have become a staple of our family’s meal time, the question Do you write? felt permanently lodged among my thoughts.

No one knows I write. I run little risk of someone interrupting my day with a distracted moment of familiarity. The thing that I most identify as my own is gently buried in anonymity; this provides my children greater privacy while simultaneously guarding my efforts from failure or criticism.

This is not to say that I covet recognition or that I envy another their success. I believe there is enough joy and success in this world for everyone. No, today I am wondering where and when we sound out our truth and dare to walk more confidently among the uncertainty of our dreams. How we answer the difficult personal truths we more easily ask of others.

a picture’s worth

It seems impossible that on the most unexceptional day, in the middle of nothing extraordinary, an assumed piece of our day can be lost in plain sight.

Today, in a technical conundrum outside my expertise, I lost months of writing and years of family photos. It was an error of ignorance and arrogance; I had never paused to consider what I might lose or the recklessness of my conceit.

It is a mysterious grief, this loss I cannot measure. Even now it seems I should wake tomorrow in time to prevent what I cannot escape.

Pictures lost to memories and words whispered against the wind. I would trade the most extravagant of my possessions for a handful of what I cannot spare.

writing out loud

Lately I am lost between the narrative of my days and the story in my mind; words pressing against my thoughts as I work with a frantic serenity to gather them quickly into print.

All or nothing, it is a terrifying need that consumes and ignites sleepy places in my soul. I have never felt more still while the wheels of my distraction spin with reckless disregard for time.

I am both hungry and sated in my pleasure, terrified that this moment might pass and leave me in want of something I cannot fathom loosing.

Every moment is a contradiction as I disappear from familiar places in my day, more present in my own skin as my fingers transpire the secrets of my dreams.

Some days I am haunted by a silent unraveling as words in want of paper work against the stillness of my pen. Gossamers of truth that play against the light; memories that catch against the sharp corners of lost minutes.

In these moments, I wonder this: what if we are given but one story to share or squander?

inside voices

I have a tendency to wear my heart on my sleeve, tucked casually beneath a coat of false armor. I guard my weaknesses with practiced disregard and posture an aloofness that undermines the tightly clenched fists that ball around worries or sadness. Joy and contentedness sneak up on me in happy moments of distracted vulnerability, tempting me into a tenderness that later invites fear and doubts.

I am learning to let the mask slip, to invite witnesses to the messy thoughts that trek through my experiences leaving muddy footprints across the story of my days. Gathering friends nearer to the voice that speaks more confidently, here, between the lines of silence.

(un)processed

This week a kind comment challenged me with a curious invitation to connect with strangers on the subject of writing processes. My instinctive reaction was to withdraw from the opportunity; the formality of the phrase “writing process” felt fraudulent as it applies to my relationship with writing. Then, in the day between the invitation and this sharing I gathered a wish for my son that spoke to my doubts.

As a gesture of gratitude for the opportunity to explore my process and honor my counsel to my children in their pursuits, I would like to acknowledge the informality of my process and answer the questions posed to me.

What are you working on? As my writing endeavors to capture intimate musings, I would humbly suggest that I am working on self rather than a literary compilation. Each written wondering is a step in my journey to greater consciousness.

How does your work differ from others in its genre? I’m certain the majority of my writings are universal in their themes. If my story is unique it is only for my interpretation.

Why do you write what you do? I write to capture questions and explore my thoughts, pausing the passage of time with an exercise that nurtures my soul and brings me joy.

How does your writing process work? I write when the words seem to press against my mind’s eye, just askew of my tongue. I am most productive in the earliest hours of the day when my home is at rest and, occasionally, in the midst of empty busyness when a thought interrupts other endeavors with the disruptive forcefulness of a petulant child.

The elegant simplicity of these questions was deceptively complicated. Thank you to Derek at Playing In The City With Trains for the lovely encouragement. Rather than name another with the responsibility of sharing their process, I would welcome those interested in embracing this experience to link their reflections in the comments below that we might create a conversation as a community of writers nurturing individual voices, collectively.

more or less

Occasionally,  someone will suggest I write. The statement is usually tied to a fragmented sharing on a social network, the unanswered question hovers in the air and I pause wondering if I should acknowledge this piece of myself.

Here my thoughts are untethered to my daily interactions, my words unencumbered by self-consciousness and weighted in a perspective that is unguarded. I allow my insecurities and uncertainties to pool beneath a more naked sharing, exposing unspoken questions and emotions within experiences that are intimately my own.

Still, some days, I feel less myself without the company of my words. This week faced with the question Do you write? I hesitated to respond feeling less myself for the unanswered question.

Perhaps the greater measurement of self rests between more and less. The unwritten question one of sustained authenticity standing consciously among my words unfettered by others’ opinions. In truth I am more worried that I could be enough among my thoughts.

inviting honesty

September 30, 2012 § Leave a comment

Tonight I invited this little piece of myself, these reflective ramblings, cautiously and consciously into a conversation among family friends. It was a new experience, one that contradicted a precedent of intentional anonymity. Here my stories are unweighted by our names and images; enveloping others into this space bred vulnerability. These sharings are my love letters to my children, my husband, and myself. Simple reminders of the life we share, a safeguard for our story least we forget. Uncertain rather I should guard my words or share them, I am trying to absorb the uncertainty of inviting honesty.
