sight

My daughter begs for stories of moments outside her memories. Recently she asked her father how we fell in love. He gave her the well-told pieces of his early memories catalogued under a vague, but certain knowing; that with each sight there was a recognition of something significant, an undercurrent that separated me from those in our company.
Last week, at the end of her school day, my daughter said, “I saw you today, Mommy, and I understood. Everyone else faded into a blur and there was only you.”
This gift of sight, being seen and valued as is, may be the most beautiful expression of love. Belonging and being between two souls linked in time by chance and loved by choice.
My eldest daughter read out some children’s definitions of love on Facebook earlier. My favourite was ‘When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just kow that your name is safe in their mouth.’ Think on that one, it’s actually quite deep-for a four year old!
I have heard this definition before. I cannot place where, but I love the sentiment.
There is nothing quite like when people choose to be completely present for one another. It’s one of the few things I truly fear that we are danger of losing in this increasingly distracted world. Your story gives me some hope :>)
Agreed. The busier we get, the more we must create stillness. Quiet among noise and connectivity to balance solitary interests.
Love it :-)!
Thank you!
That is beautiful! It happens every day when we spot each other across the crowded quad after school, but I had forgotten to appreciate it, one day melds into the next, we take these moments for granted. thanks to this post tho, tomorrow I will savour it when I lock eyes with my kids!
To be seen honestly and with unconditional love is a spectacular gift.
