whispers & wonder

November 14, 2013 § 6 Comments

Mindful of the proper passage of the seasons I am in no rush to hurry one holiday into the next, still a new chill in the air and a premature dusting of snow whispers of winter magic as the trees begrudgingly dismiss lingering leaves of their company. Moving among stores already freckled with holiday temptations, I was content to nestle into the unhurried suggestion of small surprises stowed away with anticipation of smiles. It was enough to daydream without trespassing the spirit of thanksgiving, until by happenstance I came upon an advent calendar reminiscent of one I bought before it was custom for me to purchase two. Memories of my son unwrapping neatly foiled Christmas chocolates with small, nimble fingers still warm from sleep and a crown of hair rumpled from his dreams gifted me distracted smiles as I moved mindlessly through morning tasks. Thankful for this memory I purchased a calendar for each child, happy to hold old memories wrapped in tradition as we near a season rich with sentiment and magic.

  • I want to live long enough to see Cadbury (or the Newfoundland Chocolate Company–even better, mmmmmmm) produce one of those things will better-quality chocolate.
But then again I’d probably have to get 25 or 30 of them just for myself.
Here in Canada, Thanksgiving and Remembrance Day are over so the stores now figure the path is clear for Christmas. They can have it their way but the lights on my house will wait until at least the first week of Dec. and the tree won’t be put up until a week before the 25th.
    Now the shopping…another matter 🙂

I could read you sing song these memories all day. Lovely.

Nostalgia adds to the present magic.
(By present, I mean time-wise, not those that you unwrap. Relevant though they are.)

More than the ornaments and traditions themselves, the memories beneath and between each moment tease sentiment throughout the season. Time perhaps the most valuable present and the present a most fleeting gift.
